Massachusetts All-State Audition Policy
Approved by the District Presidents and the MMEA Executive Board, May 2010.

Eligibility to Audition for Massachusetts All State Festival

  • Students in the top half (50%) of accepted wind, percussion, string and vocal auditions from senior district audition scores will receive recommendations to audition for All State.  Substitutes, students filling in parts, or students moving up in seating due to cancellations will be considered ineligible to audition.

  • All jazz students will receive a recommendation to audition for All State, provided that they have auditioned for and participated in senior district festivals.

  • Students must participate fully and completely in their respective senior district festivals* to maintain All State eligibility.  No changes of instrument or voice part will be considered for an All State recommendation.  The ensemble in which the student actually participates at senior district will determine their All State eligibility.

  • Students may only complete one (1) audition for one All State ensemble.  Students qualifying for All State recommendations for two ensembles on the same instrument must choose either jazz or concert wind/percussion/string bass audition.

  • Students that notify festival officials that they will decline to participate in the All State festival after the registration deadline, usually in February, because of conflicts with other activities or commitments, may forfeit their All State audition eligibility for the following year.

* Students that are selected for their senior district but are unable to participate due to health-related issues that are documented by a physician will retain their eligibility to audition for All-State.

Registration Procedures to Audition for Massachusetts All State Festival

  • ALL eligible students must be preregistered on-line in order to audition for All State. No unregistered or on-site registrations will be considered.

  • Late on-line registrations will be open from Saturday, January 7th to Friday, January 13th. The audition fee for those students will be $50.

  • All eligible students must be registered by their school director, using the school codes and passwords issued by the technology coordinator. Home-schooled students may be registered by a parent or guardian.

  • All auditioning students must bring their medical / permission forms to the audition site.

  • NO MORE THAN TWO STUDENTS from one school may request a special audition time.
